WHAT IS FIRE ENGINEERING?
In Australia, all building work is required to be undertaken in accordance with the Building Code of Australia (BCA).
The BCA outlines a set of 'performance requirements' which must be satisfied for all building design. This can be achieved by either following a set of prescriptive requirements ('Deemed to Satisfy' provisions), or undertaking alternative solutions (performance-based design).
Fire Engineering involves the documentation of performance-based solutions and reports to demonstrate that the performance requirements of the BCA are achieved.
The BCA is an all-encompassing document which regulates the requirements for all types of buildings within Australia ranging from the humble garden shed, to a large multi storey shopping complex, to a high rise office tower. The prescriptive requirements outlined within the BCA can therefore be quite general and non-specific for each individual building scenario.
Utilising performance-based solutions, building design can be optimised for each individual building and can lead to:
