Block K & W Refurbishment, New Build Blocks H & R

Acacia Prison

Case Study - Acacia Prison - 01

Upgrading critical justice infrastructure within a live prison environment

Client: COX Architects

Location: Wooroloo, WA / Noongar Country

Lucid was engaged by COX Architects to deliver building services design for a major upgrade to Acacia Prison, a high-security facility in Wooroloo, Western Australia. The project includes the refurbishment of Accommodation Block K and Office Block W, as well as the construction of two new Industries Buildings (Blocks H and R). Delivered in a live correctional environment, the works support expanded operations and improved functionality for staff and inmates.

In partnership with builder ADCO Construction, Lucid delivered electrical, hydraulic and fire protection design, including complex enabling and infrastructure works to support staged delivery.

The challenge

Working within a live prison environment brought specific operational and logistical challenges. The design and delivery phases required strict coordination with prison security protocols, limited site access windows, and minimal disruption to day-to-day operations.

The demolition of existing facilities and construction of new ones also required the implementation of a temporary sallyport and significant upgrades to site infrastructure, all while maintaining secure and safe conditions throughout the build.

Our Approach

Lucid took a pragmatic and collaborative approach, aligning tightly with COX Architects and ADCO Construction to ensure design and documentation supported constructability and operational safety. We delivered staged services packages to support enabling works, forward planning, and the temporary sallyport — helping maintain security continuity during critical works.

Drawing on our deep experience in justice sector infrastructure, we prioritised reliability, durability and maintainability in all services designs.

Solutions delivered

Lucid provided full tender and construction-phase design services for:

  • Electrical systems across refurbished and new buildings
  • Hydraulic infrastructure, including new amenities and services connections
  • Fire protection services aligned with compliance and correctional safety needs
  • Design and documentation for enabling works and temporary sallyport
  •  Coordination with broader site infrastructure upgrades and security interfaces

Outcomes

  •  Future-ready upgrades to core accommodation and industry facilities
  • Successful staged delivery within a high-security operational environment
  • Enhanced building services infrastructure supporting ongoing prison operations
  • Continued partnership with COX Architects and contribution to WA’s justice infrastructure

Better World Impact

Correctional facilities are often unseen but critical to a safe and functioning society. Through thoughtful, practical design, Lucid helped modernise a key piece of WA’s justice infrastructure, improving safety, usability and long-term performance. By supporting secure environments and essential services, we’re contributing to better community outcomes beyond the prison walls.
