Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix

Case Study - F1 Melbourne - 03

Engineering the power behind Australia’s biggest sporting event

Client: Australian Grand Prix Corporation (in collaboration with iEDM)

Location: Melbourne, VIC / Wurundjeri Country

Lucid has been delivering engineering design and technical support for the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix since 2022, in partnership with iEDM. Our role includes oversight of the event’s vast electrical infrastructure — from on-site power generation to compliance monitoring and forward planning. This support ensures the event meets the strict standards of the FIA and operates safely, efficiently, and with increasing sustainability.

The challenge

With a growing crowd and heightened sustainability targets, the Grand Prix demands more than just capacity — it requires performance under pressure. Lucid’s challenge is to:

  • Ensure full compliance with FIA standards and Australian regulations across temporary infrastructure
  • Coordinate a complex overlay of generation and distribution systems — balancing grid, diesel, and green energy sources
  • Support the event’s goal to become carbon neutral by 2030, introducing new energy technologies without disrupting delivery

Our Approach

Lucid integrates deep technical expertise with live event responsiveness. Our role includes:

  • Engineering design of electrical reticulation, temporary fit-out, and generator setups
  • Compliance and risk reviews during installation and commissioning
  • On-the-ground monitoring across the build, event, and bump-out phases
  • Support for strategic upgrades to permanent site infrastructure, including budgeting and planning
  • Innovation planning to phase in solar harvesting, battery storage, and hydrogen fuel cells over successive events

Solutions delivered

2023 event highlights:

  • 19 MVA of on-site generation
  • 2 MVA of grid-connected green energy
  • 400 kVA of on-site green generation
  • 185 generators and 92 superscreens
  • Power and lighting for over 49,000 grandstand seats
  • Full compliance with FIA and local codes

2025 milestone:

    • Record-breaking 465,498 attendees
    • 193 generators, 95 light towers, 38 km of secure fencing, 5.5 km of temporary circuit infrastructure

Outcomes

  • Safe, compliant delivery of one of Australia’s largest annual events
  • Scalable electrical infrastructure supporting record-breaking attendance
  • Strong partnership with iEDM, enabling national delivery across major sporting and entertainment events
  • Steady progress toward carbon-neutral operations through integrated green energy

Better World Impact

The Formula 1 Grand Prix is more than spectacle — it’s a proving ground for sustainable innovation at scale. Lucid’s work helps transition one of the world’s most energy-intensive events toward a low-emissions future, setting a benchmark for how world-class sport and sustainability can co-exist. Our role ensures every light, screen, and circuit runs smoothly — so the focus stays on the action, not the infrastructure behind it.
