The challenge

With the AFL’s Gather Round set to take centre stage, Barossa Park needed a fast-tracked transformation to host stadium-level sport and community events. The existing facility was not equipped for the lighting, irrigation, and operational standards required. Lucid was tasked with delivering a future-ready upgrade—within 12 months—that would serve both elite competition and local participation while embedding sustainable systems for long-term efficiency.

Our Approach

Lucid worked closely with The Barossa Council, Government of South Australia, and a collaborative delivery team to reimagine Barossa Park. Our mission: engineer a flexible, multi-use sports precinct capable of supporting football, cricket, netball, and tennis—all with best-practice service infrastructure. We integrated smart engineering with local values and delivery agility, coordinating design and delivery with Built, DASH Architects, iEDM, WGA, RLB, and Landskap.

Solutions delivered

  • AFL-standard oval with LED lighting designed for multi-tier play (500 lux for football, 750 lux for Class III cricket)
  • Multi-use recreation green and pavilion configured for community use and major events
  • Competition-grade netball and tennis courts fitted with performance lighting
  • Water resilience systems, including rainwater and recycled irrigation sources
  • Smart infrastructure: all-electric plant, smart metering, and centralized energy/water management
  • Lifecycle-focused systems to boost efficiency and reduce environmental impact

Outcomes

  • Facility completed in time for Gather Round 2025—and opened with community pride
  • A high-performance, sustainable sports venue engineered for year-round use
  • Enhanced flexibility enabling elite sport, community access, and future expansion
  • Embedded water and energy resilience via smart and renewable systems
  • Delivered under a tight program, showcasing local collaboration and engineering agility

“To be involved in delivering an AFL standard facility in 12 months is a rare opportunity, but to have that facility in the community you grew up in is particularly special. To be able celebrate this project with our amazing project team as well as my family and friends over the weekend has been a career highlight. Beyond Gather Round, I look forward to seeing this facility serve the Barossa for a long time to come.”

Better World Impact

This project is a clear example of how technical design can do more than meet specifications — it can reconnect people to place. By delivering an adaptable, sustainable community venue in record time, Lucid helped create a space where sport, culture, and connection thrive. With all-electric systems, smart water use, and infrastructure designed for decades of local benefit, Barossa Park is now more than a sports ground — it’s a platform for shared moments, regional pride, and healthier futures. That’s engineering for a better world.
