MCG Sports Lighting Upgrade

Future-ready lighting for Australia’s most iconic stadium

Client: Nilsen Electrical and Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

Location: Melbourne, VIC / Wurundjeri Country

Lucid partnered with Nilsen Electrical to deliver a landmark upgrade of the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s (MCG) sports lighting systems. The project involved replacing existing metal halide lighting with cutting-edge LED infrastructure — improving efficiency, flexibility, and broadcast capability at one of the world’s most prestigious sporting venues.

The challenge

The MCG hosts up to four major sporting events each week and over 3,000 functions annually. The brief was ambitious: upgrade a national icon without disrupting its packed schedule. Coordination with multiple high-profile stakeholders — including the AFL, ICC, and global broadcasters — was critical to ensure light quality, visibility, and standards compliance.

The works also had to accommodate existing tower infrastructure and mounting points, ensuring no changes to camera sightlines or player experience.

Our Approach

Lucid provided a full-service engineering and advisory role, including:

  • Engineering design, construction documentation, and project programme management
  • Asset register development and tagging
  • 3D point cloud scanning of the stadium to enable precision lighting simulation and aiming
  • Stakeholder liaison to coordinate works between major events
  • Risk assessments and compliance reviews with MCC, sporting codes, and safety standards
  • Commissioning, witness testing, and final programming of control systems

Lucid also reviewed and upgraded the concourse lighting systems around the stadium’s perimeter to align with the new LED infrastructure.

Solutions delivered

  • Full LED lighting upgrade using existing infrastructure locations
  • Sports lighting design to meet and exceed requirements for AFL, ICC Cricket, FIFA, and Rugby
  • Integration of control systems for dynamic and programmable lighting displays
  • Concourse lighting upgrades aligned with stadium-wide asset planning
  • Light fixture aiming and measurements informed by 3D scan modelling
  • Completion ahead of schedule for launch during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final in March 2020

Outcomes

  • Improved energy efficiency and sustainability
  • Enhanced visibility and broadcast quality across all sporting codes
  • Uninterrupted venue operations during upgrade works
  • Future-proof infrastructure ready to host global events
  • Delivered to program for a globally significant sporting milestone

Better World Impact

This project shows how sustainability and performance can go hand-in-hand at scale. The MCG is a cultural and sporting icon — and Lucid’s work ensures it stays at the forefront of international sport. With better energy use, upgraded safety, and more dynamic lighting control, we’ve helped set a new benchmark for event infrastructure — not just in Australia, but globally.
