University of Melbourne – New Student Precinct

Transforming the heart of the University of Melbourne into a vibrant hub for learning.

Client: University of Melbourne

Location: Melbourne / Wurundjeri Country

The challenge

The New Student Precinct transforms the heart of the University of Melbourne campus into a vibrant hub for learning, collaboration, and cultural engagement. Completed in 2022, the precinct brings together refurbished heritage buildings and two new facilities within a landscaped setting that encourages connection and inclusivity.

Key Features

  • Creation of dynamic student spaces, teaching facilities, and performance venues.
  • Integration of sustainability principles, achieving 6 Star Green Star for new builds and targeting 5 Star for refurbishments.
  • Collaboration with leading architectural practices, including Lyons Architecture, to deliver a precinct that celebrates heritage while embracing innovation.

Project Solutions

The project adopted an adaptive reuse approach to meet the University’s sustainability objectives while providing high-quality student amenities and creating a new interface between the campus and its Parkville surrounds. Aswell as interfacing with existing heritage listed buildings on campus. The Enabling Project works involved the relocation of infrastructure services to enable the landscape to be developed. This included the installation of a new 6MVA substation and creation of a high efficiency thermal plant located within the Doug McDonell Building to serve the precinct.

The Main works included the full design and construction of two new buildings, Arts and Culture and Student Pavilion. Along with the full refurbishment of four existing buildings, Building 189, 1888 Building, ERC and floors 1-5 of Building 168
