Energy Audit and Chiller Replacement Feasibility

UNSW Energy Audit and Chiller Replacement Feasibility

Data-driven insights for smarter energy and asset decisions

Client: University of New South Wales (UNSW)

Location: Kensington, NSW / Bidjigal Country

The Challenge

UNSW needed to assess options for replacing two aging chillers serving the Wallace Wurth Building — a large, high-performance lab facility. Rather than approach the task in isolation, Lucid proposed a whole-building energy audit to ensure chiller sizing and configuration reflected true operational demands and delivered maximum long-term efficiency.

Our Approach

Lucid applied our proven energy auditing methodology to assess the building’s full energy profile. This included deep data collection, close collaboration with mechanical and BMS contractors, and engagement with facilities staff to accurately map operational patterns.

By translating technical data into actionable insights, we provided UNSW with a clear view of short- and long-term energy optimisation opportunities — enabling smarter investment in both equipment and building performance.

Solutions

  • Whole-of-building energy audit for Wallace Wurth laboratory facility
  • Feasibility study for chiller replacement, aligned with actual energy needs
  • Identification of savings opportunities across multiple payback periods:
    • 1 year payback: Low-cost operational savings (5% reduction in running costs)
    • 10 year payback: Air conditioning system optimisation
    • 15+ year payback: Pathways for full electrification
  • Data visualisation and analysis including peak demand, off-peak usage, power factor and voltage profiles
  • Engagement with mechanical and BMS contractors to verify system operation and identify root causes

Outcomes

  • Optimised chiller sizing and selection based on real operational data
  • Immediate opportunities for cost reduction and improved energy efficiency
  • Strategic visibility over long-term decarbonisation pathways
  • A stronger basis for investment decisions aligned with UNSW’s sustainability goals

Better World Impact

Efficiency is more than equipment — it’s understanding how systems perform, and where improvements matter most. Lucid’s work with UNSW reflects how detailed analysis and collaborative planning can unlock immediate savings while setting the stage for long-term energy transformation. Smarter audits make smarter infrastructure — and a more sustainable education sector.
